This is a midweight crew sock with moderate cushioning—thicker than everyday socks, but not overly bulky.  Built for long miles and changing conditions, these baby alpaca crew socks deliver the comfort, performance, and durability serious hikers need. Made with a premium blend of 41% Baby Alpaca, 34% Acrylic, 23% Nylon, and 2% Spandex, they combine the natural softness of alpaca with the strength and stretch required for the trail. The result is a pair of alpaca fiber socks that feels softer than wool, stays breathable, and helps keep your feet comfortable from the first step to the last.

These are more than everyday athletic socks. Designed as true performance socks, they offer lightweight support, natural temperature regulation, and a secure, blister-conscious fit for all-day wear. In cold weather, the baby alpaca blend helps insulate and hold warmth. In warmer conditions, the breathable construction helps release heat and manage moisture, making them a dependable choice for hikers, travelers, and anyone who spends long hours outdoors. If you are looking for moisture wicking socks with a softer hand feel and less itch than traditional wool, this pair is built to stand apart.

The reinforced heel and toe add trail-ready durability where it matters most, helping the socks hold up through repeated use on rough terrain. Their clean, neutral styling also makes them easy to pair with the rest of your hiking gear, whether you are packing for a mountain trek, a campsite weekend, or a long day on your feet. They also fit naturally alongside hunting clothes and other rugged outdoor clothing, offering practical comfort without sacrificing style.

Soft, breathable, durable, and versatile, these baby alpaca crew socks are made for every season and every mile. Whether you need dependable performance socks for the trail or premium athletic socks for everyday outdoor wear, this pair delivers the ideal balance of softness, strength, and lasting comfort.

FAQs

Why are HARELOOM socks more expensive than some other sock brands?

  • Simple economics. Baby Alpaca is an exotic material that has a limited supply. Due to the scarcity of the material and the non-industrialized way in which the animals are raised, there is a significantly less material available. This means that when the baby alpaca is gone for the season, it is gone.

What is Baby Alpaca?

  • Baby alpaca is an ultra-soft luxury grade of alpaca fiber.
  • The term "baby" in "baby alpaca" refers to the fineness of the alpaca fibers rather than the the age of the alpaca animal itself, although it usually comes from the prime (first) shearing of a younger animal.

Why Baby Alpaca?

  • Baby alpaca is warm, lightweight, and soft - even softer and silkier than regular alpaca fibers.
  • It's naturally hypoallergenic because it is lanolin-free.
  • It's also highly durable, anti-microbial (odor-free), and its hollow/air-filled fibers provide thermoregulating properties (breathability) which keep you warm in cold weather and cool in hot weather.

How is Alpaca superior to Merino Wool?

  • Alpaca material has better temperature regulation properties than merino (warmer in winter, cooler in summer)
  • It's softer, breathable, and hypoallergenic because it contains no lanolin.

How is Baby Alpaca superior to regular alpaca grades (aka, standard, fine, superfine grades)?

  • Baby alpaca fibers are softer than regular/standard/fine/superfine alpaca fibers.
  • The width (micron range) of baby alpaca is thinner than regular/standard/fine/superfine alpaca, which makes it better for people with sensitive skin because it isn't itchy.

Where do you get Alpaca fiber/materials?

  • Most of the world's alpaca population comes from South America, where the animals have been bred for the last 5,000 years.
  • HARELOOM's baby alpaca comes from Peru.

How are Alpaca materials sourced?

  • Alpacas are sheared once per year, similar to sheep, and the process causes no harm to the animal.

How is Alpaca fiber eco-friendly?

  • Alpaca has a lower environmental impact than merino wool due to its
gentle grazing (soft footpads that don't damage soil), lower water and
food needs, and less reliance on harsh chemical treatments for softness.
  • Alpaca wool requires less processing than merino because it lacks lanolin and is often available in natural colors, which eliminates the need for dyeing and associated chemicals and water usage.
  • It's 100% biodegradable when not dyed.
  • Alpaca fiber is durable, so with proper care, alpaca products can last a long time without needing to be replaced.
  • Alpaca products are naturally anti-microbial & odor-free so they don't
need much washing, which means minimal water/soap/energy is needed.

Product Care

TAKING CARE OF YOUR NEW SOCKS

Unlike your typical cotton garment or other man-made materials, baby alpaca socks do not need to be washed frequently thanks to their natural anti-microbial (anti-odor) properties. Baby alpaca socks will stay fresh for quite some time and can be worn many times between washings if you simply air them out between adventures. Simply spot clean and air out your HARELOOM socks and you will be amazed at how long they last. A nice bonus is that less washing means you’re saving water, too

USING A MACHINE TO WASH AND DRY

It's fine to use washing machines for baby alpaca socks from time to time, but we don't recommend it often because we want you to get the longest life possible out of your HARELOOM stuff. Just like other high-quality wool and cashmere garments we recommend hand wash and hang dry.

Let's face it though, we know you're going to throw them in the washer and dryer because it's easier. That's ok. Our products are designed to handle it. Just use cold water and delicate low heat to dry. Some "pilling" will happen after the first couple rounds of machine washing and drying. This is normal and totally OK. The same thing happens when you machine wash and dry a nice sweater.
